For adults

Everyday words for family, travel and a new script

Learning With Momo is for adults too: for a heritage language, family abroad, an upcoming trip, learning next to your child, or a first look at a new script. Teens and adults share one mode, Teens and Grown-ups (13+), with 227 everyday words and phrases in 11 languages. Every word has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice. It is vocabulary and short phrases, not a course.

  • Every card shows the word, a pronunciation hint and one line in your I speak language: English by default, or one of 11 others.
  • Tap any card to hear its clip again.
  • Short picture games, the same ones children play: Find it!, Memory match, How many? (counting 1 to 10) and I spy.
  • Say it like Momo: listen, hold to record, then play yourself back.
  • For Arabic: the 28-letter alphabet with tracing and the Dialect lab, plus a fold-out How everyone says it box under each card, which only this mode shows.

Heritage and family

Reconnect with a family language

Pick the language your family speaks, then set the I speak line to the language you are most at ease in.

  • Arabic comes as Lebanese or Standard Arabic (Fusha). More Arabic dialects are on the way.
  • When the Lebanese word differs from Fusha (on 137 cards, about 6 in 10), the card adds a note with the Fusha form. School, Clothes and most of Transport have no Lebanese forms, so you get Fusha there.
  • Under each Arabic card, the How everyone says it box sets the same word beside other Arabic dialects, Standard Arabic and the app's 10 other languages. The Dialect lab lines up 70 words the same way, with audio for each version.
  • French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali and Korean each have all 227 words and phrases, every one with a pronunciation hint.
  • The I speak line can be English, Arabic (shown in Standard Arabic), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali or Korean.

Travel

Get ready for a trip

The Travel Phrases deck has 16 phrases for the moments that come up when you are away, in all 11 languages.

  • Shopping and money: How much is this? Can I pay by card?
  • Restaurant: The menu, please. The bill, please. It's delicious!
  • Hotel: I have a reservation. A room for two. Where is the hotel? What's the wifi password?
  • Getting around: Where is the bathroom? I need a taxi. To the airport, please. I'm lost.
  • Communication and emergency: I don't understand. Do you speak English? Help me, please!
  • Before you go, open My progress and tap Save offline to download your language pair's audio (about 8 to 12 MB). The app then works offline for up to 7 days after its last online membership check.
  • Going to Spain or Portugal? Note that Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian voice.

New scripts

Six scripts, each with a hint in Latin letters

If the writing is new to you, meet it one word at a time, with the clip and a pronunciation hint always on the card.

  • Arabic: all 28 letters, each with its name, its 4 shapes (alone, start, middle, end) and an example word. Letter names are spoken by your device's built-in voice. Trace each letter on screen.
  • Mandarin: Chinese characters with pinyin hints, written without tone marks.
  • Hindi in Devanagari, Russian in Cyrillic, Bengali in Bengali script and Korean in Hangul, each with a hint in Latin letters.
  • Only Arabic has an alphabet section, and it teaches letter names and shapes, not letter sounds.
Child learning with picture cards and Momo

With your child

Take turns with your child

The age mode is saved on the device and can be changed any time with the age button at the top of the app, so a parent and child can take turns.

  • Little Explorer (2 to 5) and Big Kid (6 to 12) use the same cards and voices you do. Little Explorer skips the Travel deck.
  • The I speak line lets a parent who is more at ease in Arabic, French or another helper language follow along.
  • On an ordinary account, stars, stickers and deck scores in the vocabulary app are one shared record per browser, not one per person. A family account (set up by us; you cannot choose one at sign-up yet) gives up to 5 people their own on each device.
  • If your child is learning to read in English, the Reading tutor on the same account teaches phonics from Kindergarten to Grade 3, for up to 6 readers, with a printable report for you.

Questions

Questions adults ask

Is Learning With Momo only for children?

No. There are 3 age modes, and Teens and Grown-ups (13+) is the one for you: all 15 decks including Travel Phrases, speaking practice, and for Arabic, the alphabet, the Dialect lab and the How everyone says it box. Every mode uses picture cards, with Momo, a smiling globe, as the mascot.

Will I become fluent?

No. It teaches 227 everyday words and short phrases in 15 topic decks. It is a learning aid for vocabulary and phrases, not a grammar or conversation course. Think of it as a gentle start, or a companion to other study.

Can I learn Lebanese Arabic?

Yes. Arabic comes as Lebanese or Standard Arabic (Fusha). Lebanese cards add a note when the Lebanese word differs from Fusha. School, Clothes and most of Transport have no Lebanese forms, so you get Fusha there. More Arabic dialects are on the way.

Does it check my pronunciation?

No. There is no speech recognition and no scoring. You listen to the clip, hold to record yourself, and play it back. The recording stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Which accent will I hear in Spanish and Portuguese?

Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian voice. The app does not offer European Spanish or European Portuguese pronunciation.

Can I use it on a trip without data?

Yes, for a while. Before you go, open My progress and tap Save offline to download your language pair's audio (about 8 to 12 MB). It then works offline for up to 7 days after its last membership check, and after that it needs a quick connection. You can also add the app to your home screen.

Can I translate my own sentences?

Not yet. A translate tool is coming soon. Today every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others.

Can my child and I use the same account?

Yes. Switch the age mode any time with the age button at the top of the app. On a shared device with an ordinary account, vocabulary stars, stickers and scores are one shared record; a family account gives up to 5 people their own on that device. The English Reading tutor keeps up to 6 separate readers per account.

Does my progress follow me from my phone to my laptop?

Not for vocabulary. Your stars, stickers and deck scores are saved in the browser where you earned them and do not carry over to another device. The English Reading tutor is different: its progress follows your account to any device.

How much does it cost?

New accounts start with a 90-day free trial, no card needed. Paid plans are coming soon: planned prices are Individual $6.99 a month or $59 a year, and Family $9.99 a month or $89 a year. Until then, contact us after the trial and we set up your membership by hand.
