Built for Portuguese
What is special about Portuguese in Momo
- Nouns come with their article Portuguese nouns are shown and spoken with their article (o, a, os or as), so you learn o gato (the cat), not just gato, and you hear from the start whether a word takes o or a. Family words such as Mamãe and Vovó come without one. On the cards, Momo does this only for French, Spanish, Portuguese and German.
- Games that speak Portuguese In Find it! on the word decks, and in I spy, Momo asks in Portuguese where the picture is (Onde está o gato?), and plural words get the plural question (Onde estão as uvas?). A right answer gets a Portuguese cheer such as Muito bem! Little Explorer hears the question only; older modes also see it written in Portuguese, with a short English line under it. On the Hello & Phrases and Travel Phrases decks, Find it! says the phrase itself instead.
Travel phrases
Portuguese for the trip
The Travel Phrases deck has 16 short phrases, such as Quanto custa? (How much is this?), each in Portuguese with its own audio clip. Here they are by situation. From Big Kid up, Save offline downloads the Portuguese audio for your language pair (under 10 MB with English as your helper), and offline use works for up to 7 days between check-ins.
- Shopping and money: asking how much something is, and whether you can pay by card
- Restaurant: the menu, the bill, and saying it is delicious
- Hotel: a reservation, a room for two, finding the hotel and the wifi password
- Getting around: the bathroom, a taxi, the airport, and saying you are lost
- Communication and emergency: saying you don't understand, asking if someone speaks English, and asking for help

The voice
Which Portuguese you hear
Every Portuguese word and phrase has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice: Francisca, a Microsoft voice for Brazilian Portuguese. In the language picker, Portuguese carries the flag of Portugal and the label Standard Portuguese, but Momo's Portuguese is Brazilian: the voice, the pronunciation hints (verde is hinted VER-jee) and words such as o ônibus (bus) and o trem (train). Momo does not offer European Portuguese pronunciation today.
- These are computer-generated clips, not recordings of people.
- Clips play at the same speed in every age mode, and you can replay a word as often as you like.
- If English is your helper, the English word is spoken by a different AI voice.
- A few sounds use your device's own built-in voice instead: the quick Oi! when you pick Portuguese, and any clip that fails to play.

Ages 2 and up
Who Portuguese in Momo is for
Kids, ages 2 to 12
Little Explorer (2 to 5) keeps to pictures, sounds and simple games: Find it! with two pictures to choose from, counting 1 to 5, and I spy. Say it like Momo is there too, with bigger buttons. Written words still show on the cards. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds travel phrases, Memory match and a progress page.
Families with Portuguese at home
The My Family, Food & Drink, Feelings and My Things decks cover the words of everyday life at home. If English is not the language your child knows best, the helper line can be one of 10 other languages, such as Français or Español. If your family speaks European Portuguese, expect some words, such as o ônibus (bus) and o suco (juice), and some sounds to differ from home.
Travellers, teens and grown-ups
Teens and Grown-ups mode (13+) has everything Big Kid has: all 15 decks, the 16 travel phrases, Memory match and hold-to-record practice. Use it to hear the basics before a trip, or to refresh words you half remember.
Good to know before you start
Momo does not check or score your pronunciation. There is no translator yet, so you cannot type in a word or sentence; a translate tool is coming soon. Your vocabulary progress is saved in the browser you use and does not sync to your other devices.
Questions about Portuguese in Momo
Is the Portuguese in Momo Brazilian or European?
Brazilian. Every Portuguese clip is spoken by Francisca, a Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) AI voice, and the words and pronunciation hints are Brazilian too, for example Oi! for hi and o ônibus for bus. The language card shows the flag of Portugal, but European Portuguese pronunciation is not offered today.
Does Momo teach Portuguese grammar or verbs?
No. Momo teaches a fixed list of 227 words and short phrases. Nouns such as a casa (the house) and o livro (the book) come with their article, but there are no verb tables or grammar exercises, and it is not a conversation course.
Can my child learn to read in Portuguese?
No. Portuguese cards show the written word and a pronunciation hint, but there are no Portuguese reading or letter activities. Momo's Reading tutor teaches English phonics only, from Kindergarten to Grade 3.
I speak Portuguese. Can I use Momo to learn another language?
Yes, any of the other 10 languages in Momo. English is not one of them: in the word decks, English is only a helper language, and Momo teaches English only as phonics in the Reading tutor, for Kindergarten to Grade 3. Choose Português as your "I speak" language on the language picker. The helper line on each card then shows the Portuguese word instead of the English one, and you hear the Portuguese after the new word on learn cards and with each match in Memory match. If the new language is not Arabic, the short written line in Find it! and I spy stays in English.
