What you learn

What you learn in Hindi

Every card shows a picture (a colour swatch on colour cards, the digit on number cards), the Hindi word and a pronunciation hint. Every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others. Then you hear the words and use them in games and speaking practice.

16 travel phrases

Phrases for shops, restaurants, hotels, getting around and emergencies, such as "How much is this?" and "Where is the bathroom?", each with its own Hindi audio clip. The Travel deck appears from Big Kid mode (6 to 12) up.

Games that use the words

Find it! (hear the prompt, tap the right picture), Memory match, How many? (count the pictures, then hear the number in Hindi) and I spy, set on a farm, at snack time and in the park. In Little Explorer, Find it! and How many? have two choices and Memory match is not shown.

Say it like Momo

Listen to a word, hold the button to record yourself, then play it back, or hear it as a chipmunk, slow giant, robot or kitty. Recordings stay in your browser and nothing is scored. In every age mode, with bigger buttons in Little Explorer.

Stars, stickers and a word a day

Each deck has 3 stars to earn, 40 stickers unlock along the way, a streak counts your days in a row, and Today's word shows one word each day.

Hindi in Momo

What is special about Hindi in Momo

Devanagari with a roman hint

Every Hindi word is written in Devanagari, with a hint in roman letters underneath, so you can sound it out before the script feels familiar. Use the hint as a guide, and the audio clip to hear how the word is said.

Prompts and cheers in Hindi

In Find it!, Momo asks out loud in Hindi, with the word first: हाथी कहाँ है? (where is the elephant?), or कहाँ हैं? when there is more than one. On the two phrase decks, Momo says the phrase itself. From Big Kid mode up, a written English line shows the question too. Finish a game and Momo cheers you on with words like शाबाश! (shabash!).

Both sides of the family

My Family has a separate card for each aunt and uncle, and Hindi has a different word for each: मौसी (mausi) and मामा (maama) on your mother's side, बुआ (bua) and चाचा (chacha) on your father's. With English as the helper, the English line just says "Auntie" or "Uncle", so the Hindi word is what tells them apart.

The voice

One clear AI voice for Hindi

Every Hindi word and phrase has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice for Hindi as spoken in India (hi-IN). It is not a recording of a person. The language picker calls it Standard Hindi. The same voice speaks every Hindi word, game prompt and cheer, and on learn cards the helper word that follows is spoken in the helper language's own voice.

  • One voice means one way of saying each word. Momo does not offer a choice of regional accents, so if your family says a word differently, their way is worth learning too.
  • A few sounds use your device's own built-in voice instead: the greeting when you pick Hindi, and any clip that is missing or fails to play. If your device has no Hindi voice, it reads the roman hint aloud.

Who it suits

Who Momo's Hindi is for

Pick an age mode when you start. It sets which decks and games appear, and you can change it at any time.

Children from age 2

Little Explorer (2 to 5) keeps to big pictures, audio, simple games and Say it like Momo, though the cards still show the written word. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds the Travel deck, Memory match and My progress.

Heritage families

If Hindi is the language of grandparents or home, parents and children can practise the same everyday words, each in Devanagari with a roman hint and its own clip. Grown-ups who speak some Hindi but never learned the script can see how words they already know are written.

Travellers

Heading to India? Teens and Grown-ups mode (13+) lets you practise "The bill, please", "I need a taxi" and "I don't understand" in Hindi, along with greetings, numbers and food words. Save the Hindi audio offline before you go.

What Momo does not do in Hindi

Momo is a start in everyday Hindi words and phrases, not a full course. It does not teach grammar or conversation, and nothing scores your pronunciation.

Questions

Hindi questions

Does Momo teach the Devanagari alphabet or Hindi reading?

No. You see every Hindi word in Devanagari with a roman hint, but there is no letter-by-letter alphabet or tracing for Hindi: those are for Arabic only. Momo's Reading tutor teaches English phonics, from Kindergarten to Grade 3, whichever language you pick.

Is the Hindi audio slowed down for beginners?

No. Each clip plays at the same speed in every age mode, including Little Explorer. Tap a card to hear the word again as many times as you like.

We speak Hindi at home. Can Hindi be the helper language?

Yes, when you learn one of the other languages. Hindi is one of the 12 "I speak" helpers, so a child learning French can see the Hindi word on each card and hear it after the French word on learn cards. When Hindi is the language you are learning, the helper is English, or another helper you choose.

Can I practise Hindi offline before a trip?

Yes, from Big Kid mode (6 to 12) up. With Hindi picked, Save offline downloads the Hindi clips, your helper language's clips and the app itself into your browser, under 10 MB with English as the helper. Momo then works offline for up to 7 days after it last checked in online.
