What every learner gets

There is no cut-down school version. Every account with an active trial or membership opens the whole app. What each learner sees depends on the age mode and the language chosen on the device.

  • 227 words and phrases in 15 topic decks, the same in every language, from family and food to school, clothes and transport.
  • 11 languages: Arabic (Lebanese or Standard Arabic), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali and Korean. French uses the accent of France, not Canadian French; Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian one.
  • Every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others.
  • Every word has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice.
  • 3 age modes: Little Explorer (2 to 5), Big Kid (6 to 12) and Teens and Grown-ups (13+).
  • Picture games: Find it!, How many? and I spy in every mode, plus Memory match from Big Kid up, with stars, stickers and a daily streak.
  • Say it like Momo in every mode: listen, hold to record, then hear yourself back. No scores and no grades.
  • Arabic letters (for Arabic learners): all 28, with their names, 4 forms and tracing, in Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups.
  • English reading tutor: phonics in 7 levels, Kindergarten to Grade 3, with up to 6 readers on one account.

How it works today

How a group gets started

There is no self-serve group sign-up. Setting up a group takes four steps.

  1. Write to us

Use the contact form and choose "Schools and groups". The checklist at the end of this page shows what to include.

  2. Create the accounts

An adult creates each account with an email address and a password of at least 8 characters, then confirms it with a 6-digit code sent by email. New accounts start with a 90-day free trial, no card needed. The 90 days start when the account is created, and the app does not show the end date, so note it down.

  3. Get each device ready

Open the app in a modern web browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and sign in with the account's email, password and the 6-digit code sent to that email. Add it to the home screen if you like, then pick an age mode, a language to learn and an "I speak" language.

  4. Membership after the trial

When the 90-day trial ends, we set up membership for your group's accounts by hand, on request. There is no online checkout yet.

Limits

What is not included

Please read this list before you plan around the app.

  • No teacher or school dashboard. There are no class rosters, assignments or school reports.
  • No learner profiles in the word decks on ordinary accounts. On an ordinary account, vocabulary progress is saved in each browser as one record for everyone who uses it, not one per learner, and it is not synced between devices. A family account (set up by us; you cannot choose one at sign-up yet) gives up to 5 people their own progress on each device.
  • No curriculum alignment. The app is not matched to any curriculum or standard. Reading teaches American English with US grade names, Kindergarten to Grade 3.
  • Not a course. It covers everyday words, short phrases, Arabic letters and English phonics. There is no grammar, conversation practice, live tutor or certificate.
  • No speech scoring. There is no speech recognition and no pronunciation score. Recordings are only for learners to hear themselves.
  • No English word decks. English cannot be picked as the language to learn. It is the default helper line on the cards, and it is taught only as phonics in the Reading tutor.
  • No checkout or invoices. Group plans are not on sale yet, and there is no online payment.
  • No App Store or Google Play app. It is a web app that you can add to the home screen.

Before you start

Good to know for classroom devices

  • Sign-in needs the email inbox. Every member sign-in is confirmed by a 6-digit code sent to the account's email. The code works for 10 minutes, on the device that asked for it. Devices are not remembered, so each new sign-in needs a fresh code. Once signed in, a device stays signed in for up to 90 days, unless someone signs out or resets the password.
  • Word progress belongs to the browser. On a shared tablet with an ordinary account, everyone adds to the same stars, stickers and streak, and that record stays after someone signs out. A family account keeps separate progress for up to 5 people. Usage records saved while offline are sent under whichever account signs in next on that device.
  • The age mode is set per device. It can be changed at any time from the header, and nothing checks a learner's age.
  • Reading follows the account. Reading progress is saved on the account, so it works across devices. One account holds up to 6 readers. Each reader has a nickname of up to 16 characters, an animal and a level, stored on the account, and a printable report in the grown-ups area.
  • Plan for patchy wifi. In Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups, Save offline downloads the audio for one language and its helper language, about 8 to 12 MB. Reading audio is not in that download: each clip is saved the first time it plays. Offline use works for up to 7 days after the app last checked membership online.
  • Check the microphones. Recording needs microphone permission and a browser that supports recording. Without permission, learners are asked to repeat out loud instead.

Privacy

Privacy, in plain terms

No ads

Learners never see an ad, and the app loads no ad networks.

Voices stay on the device

A child's voice never leaves the device. Practice recordings stay in browser memory and are gone on reload.

Grown-ups decide

In Reading, the microphone is off until a grown-up turns it on, and the grown-ups area is behind a parent check.

Usage records

The app keeps its own usage records under the account email, such as minutes, screens, stars, game scores and missed words. Each day's usage record is deleted 61 days after the day it covers, and your account's line in the daily site totals 121 days after.

Delete reading data any time

Grown-ups can delete a reader's results, a reader or all reading data at any time.

Questions

Questions from schools and groups

Can a teacher see each learner's progress?

Per learner, only in the Reading tutor. There is no teacher dashboard, and on an ordinary account the word decks keep one record per browser, not one per learner, so on a shared device that record mixes everyone's play (a family account keeps separate progress for up to 5 people on each device). In Reading, each of up to 6 readers on an account has progress saved on the account and a printable report in the grown-ups area.

Does every learner need an email address?

No, but every account does. The word decks have no learner logins. A family account lists up to 5 learners under the one account, and an ordinary account has no learner profiles. Each account needs an email address and a password, and every member sign-in is confirmed by a 6-digit code sent to that inbox, so someone who can read that email signs each device in. Tell us how your devices are shared when you get in touch.

Which ages does it suit?

There are 3 age modes. Little Explorer (2 to 5) is built on pictures and sounds, though cards still show the written word, and it has speaking practice with bigger buttons for small hands. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds Memory match, travel phrases and, for Arabic, the alphabet. Teens and Grown-ups (13+) has everything Big Kid has, plus a "How everyone says it" box for Arabic. The Reading tutor covers Kindergarten to Grade 3.

Can learners study English with it?

Only early reading. English cannot be picked as a language to learn in the word decks; it is the default helper line on the cards. The Reading tutor teaches English phonics from Kindergarten to Grade 3.

Is it matched to a curriculum?

No. It is not aligned to any curriculum or standard, and it is not a course. It is a learning aid for everyday words, short phrases, Arabic letters and early English phonics.

Does it work without wifi?

For up to 7 days at a time. Save offline (Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups) stores the audio for one language and its helper language. Reading clips are not part of that download; each one is saved the first time it plays. After 7 days without an online membership check, the app pauses until the device reconnects.

Is there anything to install?

There is no App Store or Google Play download. It runs in a modern web browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and you can add it to the home screen.

Does the app record children's voices?

Only on the device, while a learner practises. Recordings stay in browser memory, are never uploaded and are gone on reload. In Reading, the microphone is off until a grown-up turns it on for that device. Nothing scores or checks pronunciation.

What will it cost?

Each new account starts with a 90-day free trial, no card needed. The planned group price is from $3 per learner per month for 20 or more learners, coming soon. Until then, we set up membership after the trial on request.
