How it works

Sign up, pick a language, hear your first word

Learning With Momo is a web app for learners from age 2 to adult, and it runs in a modern web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Where a step below depends on the age mode, it says so.

Step by step

Seven steps from sign-up to playing offline

You choose an age mode and a language the first time you open the app on a device. After that, it opens straight to the home screen.

  1. Create your account

Sign up with your email address and a password of at least 8 characters, then enter the 6-digit code we email you. Your 90-day free trial starts when you register, and no card is needed. An adult must create the account, including for a child or teen learner.

  2. Choose an age mode

Pick Little Explorer (ages 2 to 5), Big Kid (6 to 12) or Teens and Grown-ups (13+). There is no age check, so choose the mode that suits the learner. You can change it any time with the age button at the top of the screen.

  3. Set "I speak", then pick a language to learn

First, set "I speak" (above the language cards) to a language you already know. Every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others. Then tap one of the 11 languages to learn: Arabic (Lebanese or Standard Arabic), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali or Korean. Tapping a language takes you straight to the home screen.

  4. Work through a deck of word cards

Open one of 15 topic decks (14 in Little Explorer), such as Hello & Phrases, Animals or Food & Drink. On each card you hear the word, then the same word in your "I speak" language. Tap the card to hear it again.

  5. Play the games

Find it!, How many? and I spy work in every age mode. From Big Kid up, Memory match is added, and Arabic learners can trace all 28 letters. Finish a game for stars and confetti, collect up to 40 stickers and keep a daily streak going.

  6. Say it out loud

In every age mode, tap Say it inside any deck, or open Say it like Momo from the home screen. Listen, hold the microphone button to record, then play yourself back or try a silly voice like chipmunk or robot. In Little Explorer the microphone and play buttons are bigger, for small hands. There is no score and no grade, and your recording never leaves the device.

  7. Add it to your home screen and save offline

Use your browser's Add to Home Screen or Install option (step by step for each device), and Learning With Momo opens in its own window without browser bars. From Big Kid up, tap Save offline on My progress to download the audio for your language pair, about 8 to 12 MB. Offline play then works for up to 7 days between check-ins.

Inside a card

What every word card gives you

There are 227 everyday words and phrases in 15 topic decks, and the decks are the same in every language.

  • The word in the language you are learning, with a picture (or a colour swatch or number). French, Spanish, Portuguese and German nouns include their article, like le chat or die Katze.
  • A pronunciation hint under the word. Mandarin hints are pinyin without tone marks.
  • Your "I speak" line, with the same word in English or in whichever of the 11 other helper languages you chose.
  • Audio. Every word has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice. Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian voice.
  • A Fusha note on Lebanese cards when the Lebanese word differs from Standard Arabic (not shown in Little Explorer).

Age modes

One app, three age modes

The age mode changes which decks, games and extras the home screen offers. Teens and adults share the same mode. The English Reading tutor, for Kindergarten to Grade 3, opens from the home screen in every mode.

  • Little Explorer (2 to 5). Bigger pictures and buttons, 14 decks, Find it! with 2 choices, How many? from 1 to 5, I spy, stickers and Say it like Momo with silly voices. Game prompts are spoken rather than written, while word cards still show the written word.
  • Big Kid (6 to 12). All 15 decks, including Travel Phrases. Find it! moves up to 4 choices and How many? counts to 10. Memory match, My progress and Save offline are added. Arabic learners also get the 28-letter alphabet, tracing and the Dialect lab, which compares 70 words with audio across Arabic dialects, Standard Arabic and the other 10 languages.
  • Teens and Grown-ups (13+). Everything in Big Kid. Arabic learners also get a fold-out box under each card that shows how the word is said in other Arabic dialects and in the other languages.

Before you start

What you need

Only the first two are required.

  • A modern web browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
  • An email address for your account. Every sign-in asks for your password and a fresh 6-digit code sent to that address.
  • A spot on your home screen (optional), so it opens in its own window like an app.
  • A connection at least once a week if you play offline. Offline play lasts up to 7 days after the app last checked in, and connecting for a moment while your trial or membership is active starts the 7 days again.
  • A microphone if you want to record yourself (Say it like Momo, in every age mode, or the Reading tutor once a grown-up turns its microphone on). Recording needs microphone permission and a browser that supports it. Without a microphone, you can still listen and repeat out loud.

A learning aid, not a course

Learning With Momo teaches 227 everyday words and phrases, the 28 Arabic letters (for Arabic learners, Big Kid and up) and, in the separate Reading tutor, English phonics from Kindergarten to Grade 3. It has no grammar lessons, live tutors or certificates. A tool for translating your own words is coming soon.

Questions

Common questions

Do I download it from an app store?

No. Learning With Momo is a web app with no App Store or Google Play listing. Open it in a modern web browser on your phone, tablet or computer, then add it to your home screen if you want it to open like an app (how to install it).

Can I change the age mode or language later?

Yes. Tap the age or language button at the top of the screen. Changing the language takes you back to the home screen.

Does my progress follow me to another device?

Not for words and games. Stars, stickers, your streak and deck scores are saved in the browser on each device. The English Reading tutor is different: its progress is saved to your account, so it carries over when you sign in on another device.

How long does offline play last?

Up to 7 days after the app last checked your membership online. After that, it asks you to connect for a moment, then you can carry on while your trial or membership is active. Save offline (on My progress, Big Kid and up) downloads the audio for your language pair. Reading tutor audio is not part of that download: each clip is kept for offline use the first time it plays.

Does the app listen to my pronunciation or score it?

No. You record yourself and play it back to hear how you sound. There is no speech recognition and no score. Your recording stays on the device and is gone when you reload the page.

What happens after the 90-day trial?

The app sends you to the Join page. For now, membership is set up by hand when you ask for it, and paid plans are coming soon. You never enter a card during the trial. See pricing.
