For families

Different ages, one account

Learning With Momo teaches 227 everyday words and phrases in 11 languages. One account covers everyone at home: an age mode on each device, an "I speak" language so a parent can follow along, and up to 6 young readers in the English reading tutor.

Age modes

Three age modes, switched on the device

The age mode is set on the device, not on a person. When a younger child picks up the tablet, tap the age chip in the header and choose their mode. Nothing checks anyone's age, so you decide what fits.

Little Explorer, ages 2 to 5

Bigger pictures and buttons, 14 picture decks, Find it! with 2 choices, How many? from 1 to 5, I spy, Say it like Momo with silly voices, stickers and the English reading tutor (kindergarten to Grade 3). Game prompts are spoken rather than written, and cards still show the written word.

Big Kid, ages 6 to 12

All 15 decks, including the 16-phrase travel deck. Adds Memory match, My progress and Save offline. Children learning Arabic also get the 28-letter alphabet with tracing and the Dialect lab.

Teens and Grown-ups, ages 13 and up

Everything in Big Kid, and the mode parents use too. Learners of Arabic also get How everyone says it, a fold-out box under each card that compares the word across languages and dialects.

The "I speak" helper

Follow along in the language you know best

Every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others. A parent who is more at home in French or Arabic can pick it as the "I speak" language on the language screen and follow every card, as long as the child is learning a different language. If the two are the same (French with French, or Standard Arabic with Arabic), cards show English instead.

  • 12 "I speak" languages: English, Arabic, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali and Korean.
  • The helper word is spoken right after the word being learned on learn cards, in How many?, in Memory match, in Say it like Momo and for Today's word.
  • Example: a child learning Spanish with French as the "I speak" language sees the Spanish word, a pronunciation hint and the French word, then hears the Spanish followed by the French. Each card shows one helper language, so the English word is not shown in that case.
  • Arabic as the "I speak" language shows and speaks Standard Arabic (Fusha), so it works as a helper for a child learning Lebanese Arabic.
  • Find it! and I spy do not speak the helper word. From Big Kid up, for the 10 languages other than Arabic, they also show a written English line ("Where is ...?", or "Who is ...?" for Korean feelings), even when the "I speak" language is another one.

Reading

English reading for up to 6 young readers

The Reading tutor teaches English phonics from kindergarten to Grade 3, in 7 levels. One account holds up to 6 readers, each with a nickname and an animal, and a grown-up picks each reader's starting level. See how Reading works.

  • Each reader's progress is saved on your account, so it follows them from the tablet to the laptop.
  • Sessions stay short: after 8 minutes the tutor skips to the balloon game, and after 10 minutes to the reward.
  • Each step your child finishes earns a coin, right or wrong (up to 18 a session, plus a bonus for finishing), and coins build a treehouse one part at a time.
  • Only tap answers are scored. When your child reads aloud, nothing checks the words, so it helps to sit with them for that part.

Parent report

A printable report for each reader

Each reader gets a report in the Reading grown-ups area, ready to print. It covers Reading only: the words and phrases part of the app has no parent report.

  • Level. The reader's level and how much of it is done.
  • This week. Sessions, minutes, new sounds met, words sounded out and the share of checks answered right, second tries included.
  • Stars so far. The all-time total.
  • Last 4 weeks. A bar for each week's sessions.
  • Doing well with. Up to 3 skills the reader handles well.
  • Needs more practice. Where the reader slips, in plain words, for example "Sometimes reads sh as s".
  • Try these tonight. Up to 3 activities to do at home.

Privacy and control

What grown-ups control

A parent check

The Reading grown-ups area opens only after a 2-second hold and a times-table question, then stays open for 10 minutes. The words and phrases part has no parent check: anyone can change the age mode or language from the header.

Microphone off by default

The Reading microphone stays off until a grown-up turns it on, one device at a time.

Voices stay on the device

Recordings in Reading and in Say it like Momo stay in the browser's memory and are never uploaded. Each new take replaces the last one.

Delete reading data

Delete one reader's results, a reader, or all reading data whenever you like. Each asks you to type DELETE first.

No ads

No ads and no ad networks anywhere in the app.

Sign-in by email code

Every member sign-in is confirmed by a 6-digit code sent to the account email, and devices are not remembered.

Where progress is kept

Stars and stickers belong to the device

In the words and phrases part of the app, the stars, stickers, day streak and deck scores you see are saved in the browser on the device you use. They do not sync between devices, so a new tablet starts at zero.

  • On an ordinary account there are no separate learner profiles: everyone who uses the same browser shares one set of stars and stickers and one streak.
  • Two children who want their own stars and stickers can use a family account, which holds up to 5 people. The app asks how many are learning, then each person's first name or nickname, age and animal picture, and after that asks "Who's learning today?" every time it opens. Each person's progress stays on the device, but the list of names, ages and animals shows on every device signed in to the account. On an ordinary account, give each child their own device or browser instead. Family accounts are not something you can choose at sign-up yet.
  • Stars are kept per deck, not per language, so stars earned on Animals in French also show on Animals in Arabic.
  • Signing out does not clear this progress, so the next account on that device starts with it.
  • Start fresh clears deck progress and words heard. Streaks, game wins, recording counts and the stickers they earned are kept.

Ideas

Ideas for using it as a family

A heritage language at home

Learn everyday words and phrases in Arabic (Lebanese or Standard Arabic), Hindi, Bengali, Polish or another of the 11 languages, alongside a parent or grandparent who speaks it. From Big Kid up, Lebanese cards add a note when the Standard Arabic word is different.

Getting ready for a trip

From Big Kid up, the travel deck has 16 phrases, such as "Where is the bathroom?" and "I'm lost", in all 11 languages. Before you go, Save offline downloads the audio for one language pair. The app then keeps working offline for up to 7 days after it last checked in online, and after that it needs to connect again.

Same word, different languages

Today's word is the same for every learner each day, shown in the language picked on each device. Tap it, and one child hears it in French on the tablet while another hears it in Mandarin on the laptop.

Silly voices together

In every age mode, Little Explorer included, take turns recording a word, play it back, then hear it as a chipmunk, slow giant, robot or kitty. It all happens on the device.

The Family plan is coming soon

Today, every new account starts with a 90-day free trial, no card needed. After the trial, membership is set up by hand on request. The planned Family plan is $9.99 a month or $89 a year (about 25% less than paying monthly), and payments are not open yet. See pricing.

Family questions

Do we need an account for each person?

No. One account covers everyone at home. Anyone can switch the age mode on a device, and the Reading tutor holds up to 6 readers. On an ordinary account, the words and phrases part of the app has no separate profiles, so its stars and stickers belong to the device, not to a person. A family account, which we set up by hand and you cannot choose at sign-up yet, holds up to 5 people, each with their own stars and stickers on each device, and the app asks "Who's learning today?" every time it opens.

Can we use it on more than one device?

Yes. It runs in a modern web browser on phone, tablet or computer, and you can add it to your home screen. Sign in on each device with the account email and password, then the 6-digit code sent to that email, so whoever can open that inbox needs to be on hand. Reading progress follows the account. Stars, stickers and streaks are kept in each device's browser and do not carry over between devices.

Is the Reading tutor for older children or adults?

No. Reading teaches English phonics from kindergarten to Grade 3 and stops there. Older children, teens and adults use the words and phrases part of the app in Big Kid or Teens and Grown-ups mode.

Can my child learn to read in Arabic or French?

No. The Reading tutor is English only, and French has no letter or reading activities. Arabic is the only language with letters: from Big Kid up, learners can learn the names of the 28 Arabic letters and trace them, but the app does not teach reading in Arabic.

Does the app check how my child pronounces words?

No. There is no speech recognition and no scoring of speech. In every age mode, Say it like Momo lets learners listen, record themselves and play the recording back, with no grades and no pressure. In Reading, recording works only after a grown-up turns the microphone on, and only tap answers are scored.

What is sent to your servers?

Reading results, with each reader's nickname, animal and level, are saved on your account. A family account also saves each learner's first name or nickname, age and animal on your account. The app also records daily usage under the account email, such as minutes, screens, stars, game scores and missed words. Each day's usage record is deleted 61 days after the day it covers, and your account's line in the daily site totals 121 days after. Feedback you send from the app is kept for up to 12 months with your email. Recordings are never sent, and we do not collect payment information.

What happens when the 90-day trial ends?

The app stops opening and sends you to the membership page. Nothing is charged, because the trial never asks for a card. To keep going, ask for membership through the contact page and it is set up by hand.
