What you learn

What you learn in French

French has all 227 of Momo's words and phrases, with none missing. Each card shows the French word, a hint for saying it and the word in your own language (English unless you pick another).

15 picture decks

Hello and phrases, family, animals, food and drink, colours, shapes, numbers 1 to 20, body, feelings, nature and weather, my things, school, clothes and transport, plus travel phrases. Little Explorer sees 14 decks, without travel phrases.

16 travel phrases

Asking the price, paying by card, asking for the menu or the bill, saying you have a reservation, finding the bathroom, getting a taxi and asking for help, each with its own French audio clip. In the modes for ages 6 and up.

Games in French

I spy, and Find it! on the word decks, ask where things are in French. How many? asks "Combien ?" and you tap the number, up to 10 (up to 5 in Little Explorer). Memory match pairs pictures with written French words; it is not in Little Explorer.

Say it like Momo

Listen to a French word or phrase, hold to record yourself, then play it back, or hear your take as a chipmunk, slow giant, robot or kitty. No scores and no grades. In every age mode, with bigger buttons in Little Explorer.

Today's word, stars and stickers

Each day brings one French word, the same for every learner; tap it to hear it. Earn up to 3 stars per deck, unlock up to 40 stickers and keep a streak of days in a row on this device.

In French

What is special about French in Momo

Most of Momo works the same in every language. Here is how it looks and sounds in French.

Most nouns come with their article

Most French nouns are shown and spoken with le, la, l' or les, so each word comes with its article from the first tap. The exceptions are Maman, Papa, Mamie, Papi and mon ami. Of Momo's 11 languages, only French, Spanish, Portuguese and German carry articles this way.

Questions and praise in French

In I spy, and in Find it! on the word decks, Momo asks "Où est la pomme ?" in French, or "Où sont les gants ?" for the 9 plural words. On the two phrase decks, Find it! says the phrase itself. Praise and the end-of-game bravo are in French too. Under each Où est question, a short written English line shows what is being asked, except in Little Explorer.

Already speak French?

French also works the other way. It is one of Momo's 12 "I speak" languages, so a French speaker learning Arabic, Spanish or another language can pick Français and see the French word on each card, then hear it after the new word on learn cards.

The voice

One clear French voice

Momo's French clips all use one AI (neural) voice, Microsoft Denise, with the accent of France (fr-FR). Here is exactly what you will hear.

  • The accent is from France. There is no Quebec French voice option in the app.
  • It is AI speech made ahead of time, so a word sounds the same every time you tap it.
  • On learn cards, the word in your own language is spoken after the French one, in its own AI voice.
  • Clips play at the same speed in every age mode. Tap a card to hear it again as often as you like.
  • Your device's own voice says the short "Bonjour !" greeting when you pick French, and steps in if a clip cannot play, so those moments can sound different.

Who it suits

Who French in Momo is for

Children 2 to 12

Little Explorer (2 to 5) has the picture cards, which still show the written French word and hint, and simple games with spoken prompts: Find it! with 2 choices, How many? up to 5 and I spy, plus Say it like Momo and stickers. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds travel phrases, Memory match, a progress page and Save offline.

Families with French-speaking relatives

If a parent, grandparent or cousin speaks French, Momo gives children everyday words to share with them: family, food, feelings and greetings. If your home language is Arabic (shown in Standard Arabic), Spanish, Mandarin or another of Momo's helper languages, it can show on each French card instead of English, and on learn cards it is spoken after the French word.

Travellers

Heading to France or another French-speaking place? Open Say it like Momo from the travel deck to practise each phrase out loud before you go, then use Save offline so French keeps working without a connection for up to 7 days between check-ins.

Teens and adults starting French

Teens and Grown-ups mode (13+) has everything Big Kid has: every deck, travel phrases and speaking practice with playback. It suits a first step into French, or bringing back the words you half remember from school.

What French in Momo is not

Momo teaches everyday French words and short phrases. It is not a grammar or conversation course, and it does not check or score your pronunciation. There is no translator yet; a translate tool is coming soon. The Reading tutor teaches English phonics only, so Momo does not teach reading in French.

Questions

Questions about French in Momo

Is the French voice from France or from Quebec?

From France. Every French clip uses Microsoft Denise, an AI voice with the accent of France (fr-FR), and there is no Quebec French voice in the app. Only the short "Bonjour !" greeting, and any clip that cannot play, use your device's own voice instead. If you are learning for life in Quebec, expect the accent around you to sound different from Momo's.

Does Momo teach masculine and feminine words?

Only through the article. Most nouns are shown and spoken with le, la, l' or les, so you learn which article a word takes along with the word itself. Momo does not explain gender rules, and nouns that take l' (before a vowel sound) or les (plural) do not show whether they are masculine or feminine.

Does Momo follow French immersion or Core French at school?

No. Momo's French is not tied to any school curriculum or grade level. It teaches a fixed set of 227 everyday words and short phrases with audio, so it can add listening and vocabulary practice at home, but it does not follow what a class is studying.

Can I use French offline on a trip?

Yes, in every mode except Little Explorer. Save offline downloads the French audio, your helper language's audio and the app itself. With English as the helper that is 844 audio files, about 9.0 MB; with another helper it is up to about 12.1 MB. It then works offline for up to 7 days after your last check-in, and needs a quick connection after that.
