What you learn

What you learn in Korean

Learn the cards in a deck, then play games with the same Korean words.

Learn cards, one deck at a time

Pick a deck and go through it card by card. Momo says the Korean word, then the word in your own language. Tap the card to hear it again as often as you like.

16 travel phrases

Short phrases for shopping, restaurants, hotels, getting around and asking for help, such as 이거 얼마예요? (i-geo eol-ma-ye-yo?) for "How much is this?" and 택시가 필요해요 (taek-ssi-ga pi-ryo-hae-yo) for "I need a taxi". You will find them in Big Kid and in Teens and Grown-ups.

Games with Korean audio

Find it! and I spy ask for each picture in Korean. From Big Kid up, Memory match pairs pictures with written Korean words. How many? asks its question and gives the right number in Korean, then in your own language. Momo's spoken cheers are in Korean too.

Say it like Momo

Listen to a Korean word, hold to record yourself, then play it back. Try the silly voices: chipmunk, slow giant, robot or kitty. No scores, no pressure, and your recording stays in your browser, never uploaded. In every age mode, Little Explorer included, where the buttons are bigger for small hands.

Stars, stickers and a daily word

Earn up to 3 stars per deck: one for seeing every card in one visit, one for Find it! and one for Memory match. Unlock 40 stickers, keep a day streak, and hear Today's word in Korean.

Korean in Momo

What is special about Korean in Momo

Korean is written in Hangul, so every card gives you two ways in: the word as it is written, and a roman hint for how to say it. A few Korean habits are built into the cards, too.

  • Each card has three lines: the word in Hangul, a roman pronunciation hint, and the word in your own language (English by default).
  • All 227 words and phrases have a roman hint, so you have a guide to saying each one even if you do not read Hangul. The hints follow Revised Romanization and show the sound changes as the word is spoken, split by syllable, such as 감사합니다 (gam-sa-ham-ni-da) for "Thank you" and 목말라요 (mong-mal-la-yo) for "Thirsty". Korean has no stressed syllable, so the hints are all lower case.
  • Numbers 1 to 20 are the native Korean counting numbers, the ones used for counting things: 하나 (ha-na), 둘 (dul), 셋 (set), and so on up to 스물 (seu-mul) for twenty.
  • In My Family, Brother and Sister are 남동생 (nam-dong-saeng) and 여동생 (yeo-dong-saeng), the words for a younger brother and a younger sister. The words for an older brother or sister depend on whether the speaker is a boy or a girl, so the deck uses the younger ones, which anyone can say.
  • Feelings are said the way Koreans say them about themselves: 기뻐요 (gi-ppeo-yo) means "I'm happy" and 배고파요 (bae-go-pa-yo) means "I'm hungry". Hot! and Cold! are 더워요! (deo-wo-yo!) and 추워요! (chu-wo-yo!). For these cards, Find it! asks 누가 ("who is...?"), as in 누가 기뻐? ("Who is happy?"), instead of "where is...?".
  • For picture words, Find it! and I spy ask the Korean way: the word first, then 어디 있어? ("where is it?"). For Grandma, Grandpa and the teacher it uses the respectful 어디 계셔?, as Korean children are taught. A small English line under it gives the meaning, except in Little Explorer. In the phrase decks, Find it! simply says the phrase.
  • Most phrases use polite everyday Korean, with the -요 ending, such as 안녕하세요! (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo!) for "Hello" and 미안해요 (mi-an-hae-yo) for "Sorry". The Find it! questions, Momo's praise and the let's-play greeting are casual, the way you would speak to a child.
  • "Please" is 주세요 (ju-se-yo), which means "please give me". You will hear it at the end of phrases such as 메뉴판 주세요 (me-nyu-pan ju-se-yo) for "The menu, please".

The voice

A clear AI voice, set to Korean (ko-KR)

Every Korean clip in Momo, from words and phrases to game questions and cheers, uses one clear Microsoft AI (neural) voice called SunHi, set to Korean (ko-KR). It is not a person speaking, and we would rather say so plainly.

  • Because each clip is made ahead of time, a word sounds exactly the same every time you tap it.
  • Two small exceptions use your device's built-in voice: the hello you hear when you pick Korean, and any clip that is missing or fails to play. If the device has no Korean voice, it reads the roman hint instead.

Who it suits

Who Korean in Momo is for

Heritage families

For children who hear Korean at home or from grandparents. They see everyday words written in Hangul and hear them as often as they like. A parent who is learning too can switch to Teens and Grown-ups mode on the same device. On an ordinary account, stars, stickers and the streak on that device are shared, because there are no separate learner profiles. A family account (set up by us; you cannot choose one at sign-up yet) gives each of up to 5 people their own.

Children 2 to 12

Little Explorer (2 to 5) keeps to pictures and sounds: learn cards, Find it! with 2 choices, How many? up to 5, I spy, Say it like Momo and stickers. Written words and hints still show on the cards. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds Memory match and travel phrases.

Teens and adults

Teens and Grown-ups (13+) has everything Big Kid has: all 15 decks (travel phrases included), the games and speaking practice with playback. It is a gentle start in a new script with everyday vocabulary and short phrases. It is not a course, so there is no grammar or conversation practice.

Travellers to Korea

Learn the 16 travel phrases before you go, such as 도와주세요! (do-wa-ju-se-yo!) for "Help me, please!". In Big Kid or Teens and Grown-ups, Save offline downloads the Korean audio pack (under 10 MB with an English helper). Offline use works for up to 7 days after the app last confirms your membership online.

Questions

Korean questions

Is the Korean polite or casual?

Both, depending on the line. Most phrases, such as hello and "Can I pay by card?", use polite everyday Korean with the -요 ending. The Find it! questions, Momo's praise and the let's-play greeting are casual, the way you would speak to a child. Momo does not explain when to use which, because it is a vocabulary app, not a grammar course.

Can I slow the Korean audio down?

There is no slow-down setting. The Korean clips play at the same speed in every age mode, Little Explorer included. Tap a card to hear the word again as often as you like, and follow the roman hint as you listen.

Will Momo teach my child to read Hangul?

No. Every card shows the word in Hangul with a roman hint, so your child sees the written word next to its sound, but Momo does not teach reading in Korean. There are no Korean alphabet or tracing activities (those are for Arabic only), and Momo's Reading tutor teaches English phonics only.

Can a Korean speaker use Momo to learn another language?

Yes. Choose 한국어 as your "I speak" language on the language screen. Each card then shows the Korean word as well as the word you are learning. Momo says the Korean word right after the new word on learn cards, in Memory match, in Say it like Momo, for Today's word and in the How many? game. Find it!, I spy and the cheers are spoken only in the language you are learning. If you are learning Korean itself, the helper switches to English.
