Translation

Your own language on every card

Learning With Momo is not a translator yet: a translate tool is coming soon. Today, every card also shows the word in your own language, English by default or one of 11 others.

What each card shows

Each card shows the word in the language you are learning, a hint for saying it, and the same word in your helper language: the one you pick under "I speak". In Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups modes, Lebanese Arabic cards can also add a short note with the Standard Arabic (Fusha) form when the two differ. Pick your "I speak" language on the language screen before you tap the language to learn, because that tap takes you straight to the home screen. To change it later, tap the language chip at the top of the app.

  • Learning Spanish, speaking French? The cat card reads el gato, then el GA-to, then le chat.
  • On learn cards you hear the new word first, then the word in your language. Both come from pre-made audio clips, spoken by clear AI (neural) voices.
  • You also hear your language in Memory match, Today's word, Say it like Momo and the How many? counting game. Memory match is in Big Kid (6-12) and Teens and Grown-ups (13+) modes, not Little Explorer (2-5). Say it like Momo is in all three modes, Little Explorer included.
  • All 227 words and phrases are written and voiced in each of the 12 helper languages.

Languages you can choose under "I speak"

Pick the language you know best. Arabic as a helper is always Standard Arabic (Fusha). If you pick the same language you are learning (for example, French while learning French), the card shows English instead.

A translate tool is coming soon

It is not in the app yet, so for now you cannot type in a word to translate it, and there is no search.

Questions about translation

Is Learning With Momo a translator?

Not today. It teaches a fixed set of 227 everyday words and phrases in 11 languages: Arabic (Lebanese or Standard Arabic), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali and Korean. A translate tool is coming soon.

Can I type in a word and get a translation?

Not yet. There is no box for typing in a word to translate, and no search. To find a word today, open the picture deck it belongs to. There are 15 decks, such as Animals, Food & Drink and Travel Phrases. Little Explorer mode shows 14, without Travel Phrases.

Does every screen use my "I speak" language?

No. Find it!, I spy and the Arabic alphabet do not use it. For the 10 languages other than Arabic, I spy and Find it! show a written "Where is" line in English ("Who is" for Korean feelings), whichever helper you chose (in the two phrase decks, Find it! shows the phrase and its hint instead). Little Explorer mode hides that written line.

Can I learn English with Learning With Momo?

Not in the vocabulary app: English is a helper language there, not one you learn. English is taught only in the separate Reading tutor, as phonics for children from Kindergarten to Grade 3, so it is not built for teens or adults learning English.
