On each card

What a travel phrase card gives you

Open the deck and go card by card. Each card plays its phrase, then the same phrase in your I speak language. Tap the card to hear both again.

  • The phrase in the language you are learning, written in that language's own script.
  • A pronunciation hint in Latin letters, so you can sound it out.
  • One line in your I speak language: English by default, or one of 11 others (Arabic, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali or Korean).
  • A picture to go with the phrase.

Languages and voices

Where the languages differ

The 16 phrases are the same in all 11 languages you can learn. What changes is the script, the hint and the voice.

  • Arabic. Pick Lebanese or Standard Arabic (Fusha) to learn. Those are the two Arabic choices today, and more Arabic dialects are on the way. When the Lebanese phrase is different, the card also shows the Fusha form. In Teens and Grown-ups mode, a fold-out How everyone says it box under each card shows the same phrase in other Arabic dialects and in the app's other languages, each with audio, so you can compare. More about Arabic.
  • Spanish and Portuguese. Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian voice, so you hear Mexican Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation, not European. More about Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Mandarin. Phrases are in Chinese characters with pinyin hints. The pinyin has no tone marks, so let the audio guide your tones. More about Mandarin.
  • Hindi, Russian, Bengali and Korean. Each phrase is in its own script (Devanagari, Cyrillic, Bengali or Hangul) with a pronunciation hint in Latin letters. More about Hindi, Russian, Bengali and Korean.
  • Your I speak line. Set it to the language you know best, on the same screen where you pick the language to learn. If it matches the language you are learning, the app shows English instead.

Before you go

Take the phrases with you

Download the audio while you have a good connection, so the phrases still play when you do not.

  • On the My progress screen, tap Save offline. It downloads one language pair: the clips for the language you are learning and for your I speak language, about 8 to 12 MB.
  • Offline, the app keeps working for up to 7 days after its last successful membership check. Then it needs a connection again.
  • The app runs in a modern web browser on phone, tablet or computer. Add it to your home screen and it opens in its own window, without the browser bars.

Questions

Travel phrase questions

Which languages are the travel phrases in?

All 16 are in all 11 languages: Arabic (Lebanese or Standard Arabic), French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, German, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Bengali and Korean. More about each language.

Who speaks the phrases?

Every phrase has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice. Spanish uses a Mexican voice and Portuguese a Brazilian voice.

Can my child use the travel phrases?

Yes, in Big Kid (6 to 12) and in Teens and Grown-ups (13+). Little Explorer (2 to 5) hides the Travel deck and keeps the other 14. You pick a mode when you first open the app and can change it any time from the header.

Can I use them without a connection?

Yes. While you are online, tap Save offline on the My progress screen to download your language pair's audio. The app then works offline for up to 7 days after its last successful membership check. After that, it pauses until you connect again.

Will the app check my pronunciation?

No. There is no speech recognition and no pronunciation scoring, so nothing you record is graded. In Say it like Momo you listen, hold to record and play yourself back, then judge by ear. Your recordings stay in your browser and are never uploaded.

Will this teach me to hold a conversation?

No. The Travel deck is 16 useful phrases with audio, not a conversation or grammar course. For greetings and everyday words such as food, family and numbers, the app has 14 more decks in the language you are learning.

Can I type a phrase and get a translation?

Not yet. The deck is a fixed set of 16 phrases, and a translate tool is coming soon. Today, every card also shows the phrase in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others. More on translation.

Can I learn English travel phrases?

No. English is the helper language on the cards, not a language you can learn in the vocabulary app. The only English the app teaches is phonics in the Reading tutor, for children from Kindergarten to Grade 3.
