Decks, phrases and games
What you learn in Spanish
Spanish uses the same picture decks as every other language in Momo. Each card shows a picture, the Spanish word, a pronunciation hint and the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 11 others.
15 picture decks
227 words and phrases across these topics: hello and common phrases, family, animals, food and drink, colours, shapes, numbers 1 to 20, the body, feelings, nature and weather, everyday things, school, clothes, transport and travel.
16 travel phrases
Ask what something costs or whether you can pay by card, ask for the menu and the bill, say you have a reservation or need a taxi, and say you are lost or ask for help. Each phrase has its own Spanish audio clip, and the travel deck is in every mode except Little Explorer.
Games with the same words
Find it!, How many? and I spy are in every age mode, and Memory match is in every mode except Little Explorer. Earn stars and stickers, keep a daily streak, and tap Today's word to hear a new word each day.
Say it like Momo
Hear the Spanish word, hold to record yourself, then play it back as you said it or as a chipmunk, slow giant, robot or kitty. There are no scores or grades, and your recording never leaves the device. It is in every age mode, Little Explorer included, where the record and play buttons are bigger for small hands.
Spanish details
How Spanish works in Momo
The decks are the same in every language. Here is how the Spanish cards and games look and sound, and how Spanish works as your own language too.
- Nouns come with their article Most Spanish nouns are shown and spoken with their article, such as el gato, la casa or los zapatos, so you learn each word with its el, la, los or las. Of Momo's 11 languages, only French, Spanish, Portuguese and German work this way.
- One or many In the word decks, such as Animals or Food & Drink, Find it! asks in Spanish: ¿Dónde está...? for one thing and ¿Dónde están...? for plural words such as las uvas. A short English line shows what is being asked, except in Little Explorer. In the two phrase decks, Find it! plays the phrase itself.
- Cheers and questions in Spanish A right answer in Find it! or I spy earns spoken Spanish praise, such as ¡Muy bien! or ¡Genial! How many? asks its question in Spanish: ¿Cuántos? Every finished game ends with a spoken ¡Bravo, muy bien!
- Español as your "I speak" language Spanish also works the other way. Español is one of the 12 "I speak" languages, so a Spanish-speaking parent or grandparent can learn French, Arabic or any of Momo's other languages and see the Spanish word on each card.
The voice
A Latin American Spanish voice
Every Spanish word and phrase has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice with a Mexican accent. The Spanish card in the app shows the flag of Spain and the label Standard Spanish, but the pronunciation you hear is Latin American, not the Spanish of Spain.
- Tap any card to hear the word again.
- On learn cards, in Memory match, in Say it like Momo and for Today's word, you hear the Spanish first and then your "I speak" language.
- If a clip ever fails to play, your device's built-in voice reads the word instead.

Who it suits
Children, heritage families and travellers
Children
Little Explorer (ages 2 to 5) has bigger pictures and buttons, 14 decks, Say it like Momo, and games whose prompts are spoken rather than written: Find it! with 2 choices, How many? from 1 to 5, and I spy. Big Kid (ages 6 to 12) adds the travel phrases, Memory match and a progress page.
Heritage families
If Spanish is your family's language, children can replay the words for family, food, feelings and everyday things as often as they like. In every age mode, they can also practise saying them out loud in Say it like Momo, where nothing is scored. The accent is Mexican, which may differ from the Spanish your family speaks.
Travellers
Teens and adults share the Teens and Grown-ups mode (13+). Start with the 16 travel phrases, greetings and numbers 1 to 20, practise saying them out loud, and save the Spanish audio before you leave for up to 7 days of offline use. It works in a modern web browser on phone, tablet or computer.
Good to know
Momo teaches everyday Spanish words and short phrases. It is not a full course and has no tutors, and there is no speech recognition or pronunciation scoring. Stars, stickers and your streak are not synced between devices, so a new phone, tablet or computer starts from the beginning.
Questions
Spanish questions
Is the Spanish in Momo from Spain or Latin America?
The voice is from Latin America. Every Spanish word and phrase is spoken by a natural AI voice with a Mexican accent (Microsoft's Dalia voice, es-MX). Momo does not teach the pronunciation of Spain.
Does Momo teach el and la?
Yes, by showing and saying them. Most nouns come with their article, so you hear el perro and la vaca rather than perro and vaca, and plurals such as los dientes. Momo does not explain the rules, so it will not tell you why a word takes el or la.
Can we learn Spanish if we speak French or Arabic at home, not English?
Yes. Pick your "I speak" language on the language screen. Each card then shows the word in that language, and you hear it after the Spanish word on learn cards and in Memory match. The short written "Where is" line in Find it! and I spy stays in English. Arabic as an "I speak" language shows and speaks Standard Arabic (Fusha).
Can I practise Spanish offline before a trip?
Yes, for a while. In any mode except Little Explorer, open My progress and tap Save offline to download the Spanish audio pack, about 9.5 MB with English as your "I speak" language. Offline use then works for up to 7 days after the app last checked your membership online.
