Cards, games and speaking
How you learn German with Momo
The 15 decks are listed above. Here is what you do with them in German.
Picture cards that speak German
Each card shows a picture, the German word, a pronunciation hint (dee BLOO-me for die Blume) and the word in your own language. It plays the German clip, then says the word in your language, and you can tap to hear it again.
Four short games
In Find it! you hear a word and tap its picture. In I spy you find 5 named items in a farm, snack or park scene. Memory match pairs pictures with written words, and How many? has you count objects.
Say it like Momo
Listen to the German clip, hold the button to record yourself, then play yourself back, or try a silly voice like chipmunk or robot. Nothing is scored and your recording stays on your device. In all three age modes, with bigger buttons in Little Explorer.
Stars, stickers and a streak
Earn up to 3 stars on each deck, unlock 40 stickers and keep a daily streak. Today's word brings one German word each day; tap it to hear it.
Travel phrases
16 German phrases for a trip
The Travel Phrases deck covers shopping, eating out, the hotel, getting around and asking for help, each phrase with its own German clip. It is in Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups modes. Hear all 16 in German on the travel phrases page.
- Shopping and money: Wie viel kostet das? (How much is this?); Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? (Can I pay by card?)
- Restaurant: Die Speisekarte, bitte (The menu, please); Die Rechnung, bitte (The bill, please); Das ist lecker! (It's delicious!)
- Hotel: Ich habe eine Reservierung (I have a reservation); Ein Zimmer für zwei (A room for two); Wo ist das Hotel? (Where is the hotel?); Wie ist das WLAN-Passwort? (What's the wifi password?)
- Getting around: Wo ist die Toilette? (Where is the bathroom?); Ich brauche ein Taxi (I need a taxi); Zum Flughafen, bitte (To the airport, please); Ich habe mich verlaufen (I'm lost)
- When you need help: Ich verstehe nicht (I don't understand); Sprechen Sie Englisch? (Do you speak English?); Helfen Sie mir, bitte! (Help me, please!)

Der, die, das and more
What is special about German in Momo
Most nouns come with der, die or das
Most German nouns are written and spoken with their article, so you learn der Hund, die Katze and das Wasser, not just Hund, Katze and Wasser. A few words in the family deck, such as Mama, Oma and mein Freund (my friend), have no article.
Game questions in German
Find it! and I spy ask in German, such as Wo ist die Katze? (where is the cat?), and each question has its own pre-made clip. Find it! asks Wo sind (where are) for the 9 German entries that are plural, such as Wo sind die Schuhe? How many? asks Wie viele? and says the right number in German. Under each question, a small English line shows what is being asked, except in the two phrase decks and in Little Explorer.
Cheers in German
A right answer in Find it! or I spy gets a spoken German cheer, such as Super! or Toll! Every finished game of Find it!, Memory match, How many? or I spy ends with a spoken Sehr gut, bravo!
Audio
One clear voice, German from Germany
Every German word and phrase has its own pre-made audio clip, spoken by a clear AI (neural) voice for German as spoken in Germany (de-DE). It is not a recording of a person, and there is no Austrian or Swiss German voice.
- One voice says every German word, travel phrase, game question and cheer.
- Clips play at the same speed in every age mode.
- The short greeting when you pick German, and any clip that fails to play, use your device's own built-in voice instead, which can sound different.

Who it suits
Kids, families, teens and grown-ups
Kids from 2 to 12
Little Explorer (2 to 5) has learn cards, Find it! with 2 choices, How many? up to 5, I spy, Say it like Momo and stickers, with bigger pictures and buttons. Game questions are spoken rather than written, but learn cards still show the written word. Big Kid (6 to 12) adds Memory match, travel phrases and a progress page.
Families with German at home
If German is spoken at home or by relatives, children can hear everyday words for family, food, feelings and more, spoken by a clear AI (neural) German voice. Every card also shows the word in your own language: English by default, or one of 10 other helper languages.
Teens, grown-ups and travellers
Teens and adults use the Teens and Grown-ups mode (13+), with all 15 decks and the 16 travel phrases. Before a trip, learn the phrases, tap Say it on the Travel deck to practise saying them, and save the German audio for offline use.
What Momo is, and is not, for German
Momo teaches everyday German words and short phrases with audio, games and speaking practice. It is not a grammar or conversation course, it does not check or score your pronunciation (there is no speech recognition), and it has no German alphabet or reading lessons: the Reading tutor teaches English phonics only, from Kindergarten to Grade 3. Vocabulary progress is saved in the browser on each device, not across devices.
German questions
Do German nouns in Momo come with der, die or das?
Most do. Momo writes and speaks them with their article, so you see and hear the article every time the word comes up. A few family words, such as Mama and Oma, have none. Momo does not explain the rules for which article a noun takes: it is a vocabulary app, not a grammar course.
Which German accent does the voice use?
German as spoken in Germany (de-DE), from one clear AI (neural) voice. There is no Austrian or Swiss German option.
Can I use German offline before a trip?
Yes, in Big Kid and Teens and Grown-ups modes. Open My progress and tap Save offline to download the German audio for your language pair (under 10 MB with English as your helper). Offline use then works for up to 7 days after the app last checked your membership online.
I speak German. Can Momo use German as my helper language?
Yes. Pick Deutsch as your "I speak" language, and every card also shows the word in German while you learn Arabic, French, Spanish or another of Momo's languages. When you learn German itself, the helper line uses English by default, or another language you choose.
